1. Editor's Remarks

I'm sure a few of us will be looking forward to this Easter weekend.

So where did Easter start anyway? Well basically history tells us that it's a combination of Pagan and Christian practices. But before the advent of Christianity, there was an Anglo-Saxon goddess of Spring who was celebrated. Her symbols were the rabbit and the egg which represented fertility, new life, and Spring. So, to encourage the people to celebrate this as a Christian event, it was integrated with the observance of Christ's death and resurrection.

By the way, this goddess' name was Eostre and, of course, it's easy to see how the celebration of Eostre has become what we enjoy today as Easter.

So what's in a name? If you have a funny or interesting story behind the name of your company, lets hear it! Send it to name@globi.ca and we'll be sure to publish the best story in next month's Issue. Who couldn't use a little publicity or name branding!

2. Feature Article
by Globi Web Solutions

It is no surprise these days that in order to remain competitive, it is becoming more and more essential for businesses to have a presence on the Web. Equally important to finding your way to the Internet is gathering quotes to gain an accurate understanding of the investment associated with your specific web development. The result, however, is a wide range of pricing quoted for seemingly the same services but likely the result of some web developers not taking the entire scope of the project into consideration.

Well, you might be interested to know that Web Development is no different than building a house. You work from a blueprint, talk to your builder throughout the construction, and periodically check the work in progress to ensure that it's proceeding as you had instructed. A reputable Web Developer will provide you with a framework of what is to be involved with your website, consult with you on current and future requirements, and furnish you with periodic updates as to the progress of your site development.

One of the most important factors to address during construction is the building of a good foundation that can support the house, plus any future additions. You also need someone who is competent enough to do the whole job from start to finish as well as accommodate any changes in the process. Again, these are also the qualities you should look for in a Web Developer - someone who will be with you for the whole process and beyond.

The same goes when making additions to you website. When the success of your business demands that you add a new page or even e-commerce or something, you shouldn't have to recreate your website from scratch. A well-constructed website should easily allow the expansion of features and functions that only an experienced web developer would have had the forethought to take into consideration when initially creating your website. After all, when you decide to have an addition to your house, you don't tear it down completely and then build a new house! Why then endure that expense with your website?

So remember, slouch on your foundation now and pay later or, like building a house, consider that it is far more economical to count on a skilled and reputable web developer to take care of all your business' web needs - now and in the future.

3. Web Site Tip

Gone in 4 seconds!

A recent survey by DigitalIsland.com found that we now have only 4 seconds to grab visitors' attention before they decide to leave or stay, compared to previous surveys finding an 8-second norm.

What does this really mean? Should it take an entire web page less than 4 seconds to load? No. But, here are some questions to consider when checking your website.
  • How quickly can you start seeing ANYTHING on the page?
  • What pops up first?
  • How quickly can you begin to read any text?
  • How quickly can you tell what the site is about?
Observe yourself and your friends. When you open a site, do you wait for every single image to load, or do you start looking at what loads immediately? I suspect you start looking at whatever text you see initially toward the top of the screen. (Studies show this, too, for people speaking languages that read from left to right, top to bottom.)

4. Marketing Tip

How to Use Feedback as a Future Prospect

What do you do with the questions, comments and suggestions that you receive from your website visitors? Let's hope that you keep all the information you receive in a database for future prospects. How does this work you may ask.

Well, it's really quite simple. Take a look at the information received and see if there is anyway you can help by offering a special on your product or service. For example, if you get a lot of inquiries on widget 'A', send a promotional email to those visitors who showed interest and offer a discount if they buy widget 'A' now.

If time allows, contact each visitor to let him or her know how much you appreciate their feedback and see if there was anything you could do for them now. If not, ask if they would appreciate receiving you e-Newsletter or future specials.

5. Web Site Faux Pas

Size Does Matter

From time to time, we come across websites that work against their visitors' surfing enjoyment and so each month we cover some of these faux pas to avoid.

Try reading text as small as this for a period of time. This is the size of text that some websites use to impart information to their visitors. As you can see, not only is this annoying but it is also a great way to lose potential clients. Oh forget it!! This is just to hard to read.

Know your demographics. What visitors am I trying to attract?
If I'm selling Ferraris on the web and my target market is 50+ year-old men then, 1) I know that they can't see as well as they use to and, 2) 1 in 12 of them are going to be colour blind.

So know who your market is and show them that you respect their needs!
