In the summer months, we often spend a little more time with friends and family, maybe chatting over a beer after a BBQ. The subject of your website might even come up and a friend with web design experience offers their assistance.
Relatives and friends may appear at first glance to be a great resource. They can be very experienced, you know and trust them and they normally provide discounted prices to complete the job. Yet when problems or delays arise, there is an awkwardness and hesitancy to demand proper service or results. This is usually at the expense of the company and the relationship. Better to avoid such problems by using a professional developer such as Globi Web Solutions.
Last month we talked a little about using a professional copywriter when developing your site, along with the importance of text on your home page. The right words have to be carefully incorporated into web copy, ranking your web page highly in search engine and directory queries.
For example, if you own a health studio that specializes in yoga, pilates or something else specific, you still need to include more that just those words on your home page. People looking for fitness studios, gyms and similar facilities may also appreciate finding you during their search. Words such as fitness, exercise, workout, recreation, health or wellness, for example, should also be in your text. Imagine what a customer might be typing in when they are searching the web. Thinking outside the box is all-important and will guarantee that you get much better results from your website.

Picture perfect
The Internet makes things easier, but can also be very impersonal. We can review products on line, check out a company's history and can even buy products without ever meeting a salesperson if we so desire. Yet most of us still appreciate the personal touch.
That's why it's a great idea for people to see photographs on your website. Remember, your site is usually the first point of contract for most of your clients these days and a good first impression is crucial. Whether it's headshots of individuals or a picture of the whole team, your customers like to think they are dealing with 'real people'. Smiling faces and a short biography are usually all it takes to make people more comfortable, They will then be all the more likely to explore building a business relationship with you.
So what's your niche market?
Many companies never really figure it out. 'Anyone can be my potential customer', they say and promote their products and services accordingly. Yet if you try to market to anyone and everyone, you run the risk of wasting your efforts.
Choose one clear market then ensure that your website has a section that caters specifically to that market. What information do they typically need? What type of products or services are they looking for? Be sure that your website talks about your company's experience in that particular market.
From that starting point, you can then diversify. Nike didn't become a household name by marketing to everyone. They did their research and decided to market to athletes.
The more your website can target that one particular niche, the more likely that niche will find you through the web.
The Road to Nowhere
One of the most common ways to get as much information onto your website as possible is to use links to avoid making your site too text-heavy. This can involve either a link to a lengthy document or pdf, technical specifications of a product or simply a link to an affiliated site.
However, these sites are ones that you typically have no control over, and it's vital that you check those links as often as possible. On occasion, sites can be out of service, but links may also be permanently broken. Your customer gets an error message and if you're lucky, they may try the link again. However, it's more likely they will simply forget it. It's not your site that's the problem, but it was you who asked the customer to go elsewhere for more information. If you're going to utilize links from your site, make sure you check them yourself regularly and avoid sending your customers on the road to nowhere.
"Just wanted to send a note to say that I'm very happy with the progress on the project. I like the usability of the program, and I appreciated that both John & Jason took the time to walk us through, answer our questions, and allow opportunities for input."
